Video Spotlight: Arcade Report from Fun Land AKA SEGA World
On Saturday the 6th of March 2010 I decided to spend a day in Fun Land; a large arcade in the Trocadero at Picadilly Circus. The venue is famous for previously holding SEGA World London from 1996 to 1999. Have a look at the below video I made which gives a little tour of the area as well as a look at some of the SEGA arcade machines you can play there.

First Details on Plantinum Games' Vanquish [UPDATE]
Eurogamer has published the first details on Platinum Games' Vanquish; the last title they will develop under SEGA's publishing banner. First of all, here's what we assumed the game would be:

"We're going to guess this will be a 360/PS3 release and since it comes from the man behind Resident Evil 4, it'll probably be a third person shooter."

And here's what Eurogamer are saying:

"PlatinumGames' new game Vanquish will be released this winter in Japan. Director Shinji Mikami has also confirmed development for both PS3 and 360.

Speaking to Famitsu, Mikami explained that Vanquish differs from normal shooters by being third-person, fast and filled with robo-baddies. The message: this is not Halo - although you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise after watching the first Vanquish video."

Ding ding ding! We are the winners! Maybe we should get out more...

Eurogamer will be uploading a write-up of a chat they've had with Platinum Games regarding Vanquish soon. Stay tuned.

[UPDATE 04/03/2010]
Eurogamer have uploaded their Vanquish preview. Click here to check it out.

Video Spotlight: Sonic Short
We love Pown.it. If you've never been to Pown.it you haven't lived. The site is a random collection of short, looped flash videos ranging from funny, music orientated or just plain weird animations and films. I came across this one recently and realised I had to share it with the SEGA and Sonic community:

If you happen to go looking around the site afterwards, be warned. A lot of this stuff is not safe for work or children. However, this one is safe.

Alpha Protocol Release Date Confirmed
The release date for Alpha Protocol, the special ops RPG from Obsidian Entertainment has been confirmed for the 28th of May 2010. This goes for all 3 formats; PS3, 360 and PC. Here's the full press release:

SEGA® Europe Ltd. are proud to announce that Obsidian Entertainment’s long awaited Alpha Protocol is hitting store shelves this summer. The espionage game, a fiercely original take on the role playing game genre, will launch in Europe on 28th May 2010 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC Games For Windows.

“Alpha Protocol offers a new take on the RPG genre giving players the chance to immerse themselves in the world of modern day espionage,” said Gary Knight, European Marketing Director of SEGA Europe. “Being the first ever RPG in this setting, Obsidian have written a truly immersive storyline with a cast of characters everyone will remember.”

With a plot torn from today’s headlines and more twists than a blockbuster movie, Alpha Protocol brings a new level of modern day realism to the world of RPGs. Tasked with uncovering the perpetrators behind a tragic missile attack on a passenger jetliner, players dive into a story rich with characters and locations to discover an international arms-dealing conspiracy. Through their actions and choices, players direct the outcome of the game as they ultimately decide who to befriend, trust or kill.

In Alpha Protocol, players assume the role of rookie spy Michael Thorton and are given unprecedented control over the development of his abilities and interactions with other characters. Customisable character skill-sets, attributes and weapons all play an important role in allowing gamers to tailor Thorton to their play-style.

Alpha Protocol is set to release in Europe on 28th May 2010 on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system, the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC Games For Windows.

Please welcome NightsintoDreams.com to our affiliates! NID.com is the internet's leading Nights fansite and has recently been known for its' huge campaign to get Nights into Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing.

They are still campaigning to get Nights into the game as a playable, DLC character so head over to the site now to find out how you can show your support!

New Sonic 4 Info: Dimps Confirmed and a Leak Reveals Stage Names
An entry on the X-Box Live Marketplace has revealed that Dimps are working on Sonic 4! Dimps are the developer best known for the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush series, as well as developers of the daytime stages for Sonic Unleashed on the Wii and PS2.

This is incredibly good news for fans of classic Sonic games as Dimps have been the single developer who've kept classic, Sonic gameplay at the forefront of their games. We're certainly excited :)

Also, a leak was revealed last night which brought alpha footage and new screenshots of Sonic 4. This leak confirmed that 4 zones will make it into Sonic 4 as well as a special stage. The zone names are Splash Hill Zone, Lost Labyrinth Zone, Casino Street Zone and Mad Gear Zone. We're certainly hoping Mad Gear Zone will be Final Fight themed (unlikely sad)!

Unfortunately, the video and screenshots have now been removed from most sites at the request of SEGA. They were quick on this one!

Ivy the Kiwi? Not a SEGA Game After All
Prope's Ivy the Kiwi? is not going to be published by SEGA after all. Namco Bandai have picked up the game for release on Wiiware, DSiWare and a full, packaged retail release for the 22nd of April in Japan.

When SEGA funded the opening of Yuji Naka's Prope studio, one of the agreements was that if SEGA refuses to publish a game by the studio, only then are they allowed to sell the game to another publisher. This is probably why the studio is releasing this game through Namco Bandai.

Other than the publisher, the only new information about the game is that it will now feature a 4 player race mode. Still no word on a Western release at this time.

Another new (sort of) SEGA Game Revealed; Ivy the Kiwi!
Prope's Windows Mobile exclusive game, Ivy the Kiwi is now getting a Wii and DS release on April 22nd in Japan.

No word has been given on a Western release at this time but if that doesn't happen, remember that if you're a DS owner you can import the game and still play it as the console doesn't have any region lock-out.

Ivy the Kiwi is a game similar to Lemmings in which you must guide an already moving character to a safe destination with the options available. Ivy the Kiwi sees you drawing bridges to help direct Ivy to safety. As Ivy is always moving, the game requires you to think quickly and strategicly in order to complete the stages.

You can visit the Ivy the Kiwi page at Prope's website to see screenshots of all 3 formats and an explanation of the gameplay. Despite the use of Japanese, it's fairly easy to navigate.

SEGA Announce Tournament of Legends
Tournament of Legends is a new, 3D Wii brawler set for a May 2010 release. The game is being developed by High Voltage software; the creators of The Conduit. The game is being promoted as a 'sophisticated, weapon-based fighter' so expect similarities to Namco's Soulcalibur series.

Here's the words right from the horse's mouth:

"Tournament of Legends offers a 3D fighting experience for one or two players, featuring a host of fighters based on legends from world mythology: the Minotaur, a powerful Gladiator, a mighty Valkyrie and other well known and awe-inspiring characters. Take these fighters to epic battles in fantastic fighting arenas where the combatants wield legendary weapons, launch magical attacks and dodge giant mythological creatures that protect their lairs. Master a range of incredible combat moves; including unleashing a man-eating lion, summoning a deadly rain of arrows and throwing a nest of venomous snakes.

Tournament of Legends strives to offer even the most sophisticated Wii gamer a rich weapon fighting experience. Players will be able to switch weapons and enchantments with other characters, or compete in various Wii Remote™/Nunchuk™ controller challenges which include dodging giant mythological creatures, or restoring health and armour during fights. The game also features an Interactive Training mode and supports the Classic Controller™.

Tournament of Legends cinematic effects and graphics are fueled by the High Voltage Software Quantum 3 engine, specifically designed and optimized for Wii. Large 3D mythological fighters move fluidly while all fighting arenas, characters, and magical attacks are polished by advanced real-time lighting, blended animation, cinematic colour curves and more. "

Head over to the SEGA Europe Blog to see the first screenshots of the game; they look VERY nice. I thought they were from a 360/PS3 game on first inspection.

Rejoice! Project Needlemouse is Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1!
SEGA along with Gamespot, have just announced that Project Needlemouse is actually Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1; the first part in an episodic series of games similar to the way Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were 2 halves of the same game.

The game will be released digitally via the X-Box Marketplace, Playstation Network, Wiiware and the Iphone. This follows Capcom's strategy by releasing Mega Man 9 exclusively on digital services, despite the series being released as hard-copy software up until that point.

The game will be released worldwide in July 2010. It will see the return of signature moves such as the spin-attack and collectable items like the Power Sneakers. Classic enemies, designs, scenery and 16 bit inspired music are also confirmed to make a comeback. The game is also designed similarly to Sonic Rush with 3D character models moving on 2D backdrops.

Gamespot also have the exclusive teaser trailer showing off the game's first piece of gameplay footage. Check it out here:

An official site has also been opened. It contains countdown timers indicating when the next piece of news, media etc is going to be announced. Keep your eye on this one!

All the current details on the game can be found in an interview with SOA's Ken Balough. The interview can be found here. An interesting point I'd like to pick up on is this:

"GS: Is this where the Sonic franchise is moving, or can we still expect to see console and portable titles?

KB: Sonic as a brand is definitely not moving away from our packaged console versions. Making Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I for download is just a new way to offer a great Sonic experience through a different medium."

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that this answer could prove that once all episodes of Sonic 4 have been released digitally, SEGA will release them all as a packaged console game.

Excited!

Platinum Games Reveal Their Last SEGA Published Game
That's right, Platinum Games have just unveiled the last game SEGA will publish for them (unless the contract is renewed of course); Vanquish!

A teaser trailer can be viewed on the Platinum Games official blog so click here to see that now!

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is signed on to direct. This will be the first game he's been at the helm at since 2006's God Hand.

Because the trailer doesn't show any in game footage, all we can do is speculate what the game will end up being. We're going to guess this will be a 360/PS3 release and since it comes from the man behind Resident Evil 4, it'll probably be a third person shooter.

Does anyone else get a distinct vibe of Halo after watching this? Maybe this could be SEGA's answer to Halo! Time can only tell.

After Burner Climax Confirmed For PSN & XBLA
SEGA have just confirmed that After Burner Climax, the first official After Burner game since After Burner II in 1987, has been confirmed for a Spring 2010 release on Playstation Network and X-Box Live Arcade. Here's the full press release from the SEGA Europe Blog:

Oh yes indeed, get ready to kick the tires and light he fires, for over 20 stages of rocket dodging, dog-fighting, jet fighter action. Developed by SEGA’s AM2 division, After Burner Climax - a title the Community Team has oft been asked for – is going to be hitting the 360 Marketplace and PSN Store later this year – “Spring 2010″ to be precise.

Its fast and furious stuff – built for all skill levels, so you don’t have to be called Maverick or Iceman to beat it! Using Climax Mode, players can activate slow motion, which makes avoiding rockets and bullets easier, and increasing accuracy whilst aiming for those harder to hit targets!

Another classic SEGA franchise heads to 360/PSN, I wonder what Challenge SEGA will have to say about that? ;)

In other news, After Burner: Black Falcon for PlayStation Portable® will be available for download via the PlayStation® Store on the 4th of February so something else to look out for.

An announcement trailer can also be viewed on YouTube. This shows off the games beautiful graphics, some gameplay footage and use of the Climax Mode which allows you to slow down time, aim a large amount of missiles at a wave of enemies and blast off at a ridiculous speed. View it by clicking here.

Also, here's some screenshots of the game in action:
